Desert Flower

In religion before Christmas we were studying the MDG's. To study the MDG about gender equality we watched a dvd called Desert Flower. It is about the Somalian model Waris Dirie. The movie is called Desert Flower because that is the translation of her name. The story of her life was very interesting but very sad and emotional to watch. It followed her journey from living in poverty in her home country of Somalia to her life as a famous model in London.
Her journey to London made her realise that the practise of female genital mutilation is not carried out on all females. This makes her think that part of being a woman has been taken away from her.
In the end of the movie she talks at a UN meeting about the issue of female genital mutilation. I found the movie really informative as i didn't know anything about this practise before and i found Waris' story quite extraordinary.
